The hardware

Which phone does it work with?

A phone running Android 8.0 or later. There's no iPhone app for now.

Do I need the unit?

No. The app works with just your phone, and that's how the beta runs. The unit brings centimetre accuracy and a measured angle, but it's still a prototype: it isn't on sale.

How accurate is it without the unit?

With the phone's GPS and gyroscope, the position is accurate to within a few metres and the drift angle is estimated. It's a rough idea for trying out the app, not a competition measurement.

The unit, on the other hand, is designed to track the car to the centimetre, 20 times a second, and measure the angle with two antennas. All about the unit

Do I need signal at the circuit?
  • For RTK, yes: the phone receives the corrections from the Centipède network through its mobile connection (4G) and passes them to the unit. Without them, the unit still measures, without an RTK fix: the app warns you that the score will be less accurate.
  • For the map, not necessarily: a layout's aerial photo can be saved on the phone before you leave, for tracks with poor signal.
  • For everything else, no: runs are recorded, scored and replayed on the phone. Only the social features (account, friends, leaderboards, live tandem) need signal.
Does it plug into the car?

No. No socket, no wiring harness, no diagnostic port: the unit mounts on the roof and runs on its own battery, and the phone sits on a mount.

Where can I use it?

On a circuit, a closed track or at a track day. Racemeter isn't made for open roads.

Your data

Where does my data go?

Without an account, everything stays on your phone: runs, layouts, logbook and videos.

With an account, your runs are also stored on the Racemeter server, hosted in France, and they're private by default there. Sharing a run, appearing in a leaderboard or showing your profile always needs your consent.

Videos, the unit's black box and the RTK corrections never go through the server.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The app works entirely without an account. It's only used for the social features, in beta: friends, activity, shared layouts, leaderboards and live tandem. You must be 15 or over to create one.

Can I delete my account?

Yes, from the app, with a confirmation. Your runs, their files, your share links and your place in the leaderboards go straight away; the server's backups forget them within 30 days. You can export your data first.

What's next

How much does it cost, and when is it out?

No price or date yet, for either the app or the unit. The app is in testing, the unit is a prototype.

What about grip, run and drag?

They're planned, but not here yet. Today, Racemeter scores drift.

How do I join the beta?

Write to us at contact@racemeter.fr with your phone, your car and where you drive. You'll receive the Android app as a file to install: it isn't on Google Play yet. How it works
